FilmAid’s Response to the Massive Earthquake in Haiti

On January 12, 2010 Haiti was rocked by a major earthquake which devasted the capital, Port au Prince, and the surrounding area. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Haitians were displaced and relocated into tented camps around the country.

FilmAid has partnered with Cine Institute, located in Jacmel, Haiti, to create and screen films that provide critical information to newly-homeless populations. These films are in both Creole and French and have been developed to inform Haitians about surviving and coping in the aftermath of the disaster. The goal is to help the local populations to participate productively in the recovery of their country.

The FilmAid program utilizes indoor and outdoor film/video screenings to reach the large population of people that currently have no other technology-aided means of accessing information. The program also enables on-the-ground capacity for the creation of new content in rapid response to needs as they are identified. It also provides a mechanism for these displaced people to participate in the flow of information to donors, aid organizations, and other partners aiding in the recovery process.

Issues to be addressed include disease prevention, pre-hurricane preparedness, tent safety, good water and sanitation practices, access to food, cash for work, property rights, child protection, agricultural practices, accessing and effectively utilizing supplies and services provided by the agencies on the ground, and understanding the recovery progress.

FilmAid is partnering with a variety of NGO’s and humanitarian organizations to facilitate their communications needs.

This program has been made possible by the generous support of Google, Cinepolis, the Tribeca Film Institute, the Bernard Mevs Foundation, DotSub, MultiLink, American Unleashed, Nocturne Productions, Rock-It Cargo, Warner Bros. and Disney.

In conjunction with Oxfam and the Cine Institute FilmAid created a video that was presented at the United Nations on March 31. Over 150 countries that have pledged over $10 billion to the recovery of Haiti viewed this video at the conference. You can watch it to by clicking here:
